"Ethical Pessimism: Good Work in Bad Times"
Professor Roy Scranton

For years, the United Religious Community of St. Joseph County has hosted the local Interfaith Observance of the National Day of Prayer. In 2025, we’re honored to welcome Professor Roy Scranton for his talk, "Ethical Pessimism: Good Work in Bad Times."
Roy Scranton is the author of several books, including Learning to Die in the Anthropocene, Total Mobilization: World War II, and the novel War Porn.
A 2024 Guggenheim Fellow, Scranton teaches at the University of Notre Dame, where he directs the Environmental Humanities Initiative. His next book, Impasse: Climate Change and the Limits of Progress, is forthcoming from Stanford University Press in August 2025.
